An independent Austrian developer named Peter Steinberger quietly built OpenClaw, a lobster-themed open-source AI project for coding and agentic tasks. Three months later, it exploded in popularity, landing center stage at Nvidia’s GTC conference on March 21, 2026.

Nvidia CEO Calls It the Next ChatGPT

In his keynote, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described OpenClaw as “the most popular, open-source project in the history of humanity.” He told CNBC’s Jim Cramer on the sidelines, “This is definitely the next ChatGPT.”

Huang pointed to its speed: OpenClaw beat Linux’s 30-year adoption in just weeks. Developers use it to build AI agents that handle real tasks, like scanning eBay for deals and bidding automatically. They all run on home computers without big cloud providers.

Nvidia even announced free security tools called NemoClaw to help businesses adopt it safely.

From Obscurity to OpenAI Hire

Steinberger’s creation lets hobbyists and devs manage AI agents over apps like WhatsApp and Telegram from devices such as a Mac Mini. Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that Steinberger was joining the company. Altman said the project stays open source, with Steinberger helping build “the next generation of personal agents.”

CNBC covered the GTC hype, quoting experts like David Hendrickson of GenerAIte Solutions: “It proved that fully autonomous AI can be run at home without relying on the Magnificent 7 or Big AI.”

Analysts at Intellectia noted OpenClaw shows independents can rival big labs, pushing open-source ahead.

This solo dev’s release marks a shift: powerful AI agents don’t need trillion-dollar valuations to go viral.
