Apple plans to open up Siri in iOS 27 so it can route user queries to third-party AI models like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude, moving beyond its current tie-up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman broke the news, saying the change comes through a new “Extensions” system. Users with apps like Gemini or Claude installed will pick their preferred AI right in Siri settings. Apple pulls this off without separate deals for each provider. Instead, AI apps from the App Store opt in to work with Siri, a new Siri app, and other system features.
NewsBytes notes Siri already forwards some questions to ChatGPT, but iOS 27 adds choice for Google, Anthropic, and others. Test versions show the settings menu under Apple Intelligence, with direct links to download compatible apps.
How users pick their AI
- Install an AI app from the App Store (Gemini, Claude, etc.).
- Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Extensions.
- Toggle on the ones you want. Siri then sends queries there based on your choice.
The Motley Fool adds Apple takes a cut from any paid subscriptions bought through these integrations, which could pad services revenue. Apps like Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot, or xAI’s Grok might jump in too.
Deeper changes ahead
The overhaul includes a new Siri chatbot codenamed “Campos,” baked into iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. It handles text and voice, and works with these extensions. Apple still uses Gemini under the hood for its own Siri upgrades.
The Hans India and Prism News confirm the full reveal hits at WWDC on June 8. No word yet from Apple.
