According to the NVIDIA Newsroom, NVIDIA and Emerald AI announced a partnership with AES, Constellation, Invenergy, NextEra Energy, Nscale Energy & Power, and Vistra to build AI factories that connect to the power grid faster and act as flexible assets.

The companies revealed this at CERAWeek. These factories will use NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin DSX AI Factory reference design, which includes the DSX Flex software library to link AI operations with grid services. They’ll generate AI tokens and intelligence while providing grid support through adjustable power use.

For quick starts, the factories can pair with on-site energy generation and storage as temporary power. Later, those resources shift to help the grid during high demand. Emerald AI’s Conductor platform manages compute flexibility, batteries, and other resources to hit power targets without cutting AI workloads.

How factories help the grid

Power grids handle peak loads but sit idle most times. Flexible AI factories could free up 100 gigawatts across the US by shifting during stress periods, cutting the need for big expansions. They turn electricity into high-value AI outputs.

Many AI projects add their own power sources because grid connections take too long. But keeping them separate wastes assets and raises costs. This setup speeds connections, uses co-located power smartly, and feeds back to the grid.

Company commitments

  • AES: Building flexibility into AI infrastructure for faster growth.
  • Constellation: Using data centers for demand response to handle peaks.
  • Invenergy: Pairing quick power with grid paths for reliability.
  • NextEra Energy: Adding generation that integrates cheaply.
  • Nscale: Supplying power back during peaks at their West Virginia site.
  • Vistra: Adjusting AI power use to fit grid conditions.

Key quotes

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang: “AI factories are the engines of the intelligence era… energy, compute, networking and cooling as one architecture.”

Emerald AI CEO Varun Sivaram: “AI factories… can also provide measurable relief back to the grid.”

Last year, the pair tested this at five data centers worldwide. DSX Flex rolls out commercially this year at NVIDIA’s Virginia research center, the first power-flexible AI factory with Vera Rubin gear.
