OpenAI wants to grow its workforce from 4,500 people now to 8,000 by the end of 2026. That’s the word from a Financial Times report, which spoke to two people familiar with the plans.

The new hires would go mostly into product development, engineering, research, and sales. OpenAI also plans to bring on “technical ambassadors” – specialists who help business customers get more out of its tools.

Office space jumps too

To fit everyone, OpenAI signed a deal for more space in San Francisco’s Mission Bay. It subleased about 280,000 square feet at the old Dropbox headquarters, pushing its total footprint there past 1 million square feet. A Benzinga report citing Fortune and the FT, plus Financial Express, confirm the move.

This comes as OpenAI faces heat from rivals like Anthropic, which has picked up steam with enterprise customers. Data from payments firm Ramp shows new business buyers picking Anthropic more often lately, though OpenAI calls that stat misleading since big deals don’t run through credit cards. Coverage in Times of India and Newsgram ties the hiring push to that pressure.

Sam Altman has pushed staff to sharpen focus on core products like ChatGPT and the Codex coding model. OpenAI is even talking joint ventures with private equity firms to roll out its tech in their portfolios.
